I keep thinking back to the brilliance of this fic every once in a while so it deserves a proper bookmark. I've read groundhog day fics before, but none of them have ever hit the same way this one has. The repetition and hopelessness is conveyed so so so well. The confine of the pink room makes it a small world for four years as Steve and Tony deal with mental illness and the virtually unsolvable puzzle that's seemingly their only way out. The room is constant but they are not, and their relationship with each other develops with every day that they're stuck there. Lovely angst + a lovely ending.

It's something about the concept of loving somebody throughout the course of many years that makes this fic so special. You can really grasp the feel of time passing as you read this—letters and drawings at many different points in Steve's life post-Civil War tell a large part of the story. Pining for someone from a distance and only hearing about them through the news and word of mouth builds up the anticipation for the happy ending. It's fun to read about superheroes but it's comforting to see Steve and Tony move on from their lives as public figures and finally merge paths as regular people.

    Summary

Stephanie Rogers isn't happy to be in the 21st century, but she's even less thrilled to be on a team with Antonia Stark who seems as spoiled and self-centered as people come. She and Tony do their best to ignore each other, until their mutual insomnia causes them to bond over the new American pastime: late night television watching. Eventual Steph/Tony.

I took a gamble on this one because it's very rare that I read a genderbend fic since I'm drawn more towards canon-compliant content for most fandoms, but I was heavily craving femslash so I decided to give it a shot, and I am so immensely happy that I did. I have no words to describe my love for a fic like this?? It's like Steve's canon fame as Captain America and Tony's canon influence as a billionaire but just? Better????? So much better because they're written as women? If the Marvel movies were like this I would DEVOUR them and then rewatch them with an undying obsession.

So! Where do I begin? The very thought-out rewrite of Steph's time at the USO as a showgirl was really cool to see! The way people would perceive her and idolize her if something as simple as her gender was different is portrayed extremely nicely. I like that it's not depicted as more difficult or tragic than it would usually be; it's simply different. In ways that make so much sense and reflect the real world. And then for Tony? The crack-treated-seriously TMI of her breast implants asjfsdjfjd it literally left me speechless with how hilariously unfiltered it was and also her rambling about stuff like that is just so true her character as Tony Stark, so the author really preserved everyone's personalities, which takes a massive amount of skill to do especially when the story requires many details to be altered. The ending was absolutely heartwarming so I'm just left feeling so fulfilled because this fic really SERVED. I highly recommend it if genderbends are something you're open to reading because after this I actually went on a whole spree so you KNOW this was a trailblazer.

This is the crème de la crème of not only the Stucky or the Marvel fandom, but of all of AO3. This is classic literature. It deserves to be studied, annotated, dissected, written about in spinoffs, scholarly essays, taught in schools, colleges, clubs. This is written by two people who really know American history and who are able to look at two films and see more than just entertainment and science fiction and then craft this whole masterpiece with nothing but their minds. Like? All of this came out of their imagination? I can't even begin to comprehend writing something like this, and I was blown away the entire duration I was reading it. I first heard about NEC in a Stucky edit with quotes embedded into it and I was like: what is that? A comic run? A novelization? And then I searched it up and imagine my delight when I found out it was a fic. I read a portion of this on a 3.5-hour school-sanctioned bus ride to Universal Studios and I could not get over how carefully planned each line of each letter was. This series is an artwork and a history book all in one, and it's almost strange to reflect on it and think about how none of these characters are real people, because they feel so real. They feel like historical figures. And I don't think I'll ever stop feeling a little disappointed they aren't. But Captain America's life isn't the main takeaway here—it's the fact that the authors were capable of such storytelling, showing us a fictional world that teaches us just like a real one does.

The thing about hating Steve Rogers is that it shouldn’t be easy - but it really, really is.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I've been OBSESSED with this fic oh my god the character study was such a nice surprise, as I clicked in expecting a regular action-packed fic layered with angst, but character studies will always have my heart and this one is no exception. It's as much about Steve as it is about Tony even though it takes place from Tony's point of view, and their process of falling out of touch and finding their way back to each other is so quietly devastating and bittersweet all the way to the end. Fics like these make me so spoiled because it's line after line of brilliant sentences strung together and I used to be able to read things where there'd be one pretty phrase and I'd linger on it forever but now why would I settle for a few special words when I can have a few thousand all at once? This fic is thought-provoking and definitely one I've read multiple times. It made me consider pieces of canon that I overlooked originally.

If I had to choose one favorite line above the rest, though? It'd be this one: "You’re so warm – no part of you was ever meant to be frozen." Steve's time in the ice is so often disregarded in the movies even though the loss of decades would impact him in unimaginable ways so I'm always drawn to fics that explore this. Thawing ice is also a metaphor for this story's progression. Tony warms up to Steve until they reach a mutual equilibrium, and it's a rollercoaster.
